Want to Read Spa on your iPhone? There’s an App for That

Do you do everything with your iPhone?
Do you email, get directions, scan your favorite blogs, talk on the phone, make reservations for dinner, play games, read the news, etc., etc., etc? If you’re nodding your head, then you might be interested to know that now you can also get Spa magazine on your iPhone through the new, free Zinio app. (Single issues of Spa are $4.99 and a 6-issue subscription is $6.97. And with an iPhone purchase you’ll also have access to the magazine on your computer.)
The app allows you to see the pages and beautiful photos just as they appear in print, but it also lets you drill down and read the articles in a resized, iPhone-friendly format. It’s perfect for anyone who wants to read their magazines on the go without lugging around a stack of them. And the next time you’re trying to remember the name of that amazing Palm Springs spa we profiled in the March/April 2010 issue, all you have to do is pull out your phone.
We’re pretty excited about how great the magazine looks on our iPhones! Check it out and let us know what you think.

Behind the Scenes: Terranea Resort Photo Shoot

A lot of work goes into planning and executing our photo shoots, and this shoot for our January/February 2010 story on Terranea Resort was no exception. The location was beautiful and the crew was fabulous, but no amount of preparation could have prevented the “freak” mid-morning fog bank that rolled into the resort. Luckily, a lunch break and a couple of indoor shots later it had moved on, allowing us to get in some final afternoon shots.
Here’s a glimpse of our favorite behind-the-scenes moments (above), and you can check out the entire article in the newest issue, on newsstands (and online) now!
Clockwise, from top left: trying to work around the fog bank that rolled in; assorted necklaces to choose from; getting a close-up in the spa on a salt scrub; the crew watching at the spa pool; making good use of the dual balconies to get a great shot; Victor Maze (art director), Ericka McConnell (photographer), and Veronica Sooley (photo editor/stylist) going over images; Wendy Mink earrings.

Behind the Scenes: Hair Volumizing Tip
At the photo shoots we always love getting insider tips from the amazing hair and makeup artists we work with. While at our most recent shoot at Terranea Resort, artist Keiko Hamaguchi let us in on her secret for achieving volume and texture.
She recommends prepping the hair with Shu Uemura Depsea Foundation in Moisture (normal to dry hair), Smoothing (coarse, unruly hair), or Repair (damaged, sensitized hair) depending on your hair type. Comb the product through towel-dried hair to smooth the hair fiber and create a base for styling. Next she applies Shu Uemura Liquid Fabric mineral texture spray to encourage wavy texture in the hair and provide heat and moisture protection.
Follow these steps and, voila!, you’ll have hair fit to be photographed.
