Moon Therapy: Happy Autumn Equinox
Today’s post is from Lori B. Rosen, who writes Spa’s Zodiac Therapy each month.![]()
According to myth, it is believed that the Fall Equinox is a time of balance, when “day and night” are equal. Many cultures celebrate this time with festivities and rituals:
- Higan is a week of Buddhist services observed in Japan during the September equinox. It is a time to remember ancestors’ and celebrate the spiritual movement from the world of suffering to the world of enlightment.
- In China the mid-autumn festival (Moon Festival) is celebrated around the time of the September equinox. Families travel far and near to celebrate together. Dragon dances are performed and offerings are made to honor the moon.
- Mythical creatures associated with the fall equinox: gnomes, mintaurs, and the sphinx.
Tuesday 9/22: Moon in Scorpio + Fall Equinox = Lunar Magic! Scorpio’s moon combined with the Equinox allows us time to delve deep and penetrate our inner psyche. Let’s collectively use this powerful vibration to meditate and reflect on what we want to hold on to and what we need to release. Now that we have reevaluated our visions and dreams, the time is ripe for planting our seeds of hope, passion, and devotion.
Thursday 9/24: Sagittarius Moon gallops in bringing favorable energy for travel plans, sport activities, and outdoor adventures. Word of caution to all Sags, please be super mindful not push the envelope and know when to say Whoa!
Saturday 9/26: Moon in Capricorn. Use this motivational moon to set long term financial plans, create your 2010 budget, or complete your “to do” list. Remember, your point of power is now.
I like to think that the moon is there even if I am not looking at it. —Albert Einstein

Happy Spring!
That has also been my approach to this recession we are experiencing bright and sunny!
On a recent television appearance on Canada AM, I was interviewed by Beverly Thomson about how spas are doing in this economy. I have received emails and letters about spas closing, some expanding with new locations; about corporate business down, but other spas flourishing because people recognize that they have to look after themselves in these times. So it is really varied across the country. What is most important is that we each look after ourselves in the best way possible.
We have had good news about new spas opening and there are some great deals to be had in spas offering treatments in their less busy times such as Monday – Wednesday. I’d rather see great deals than close the spa for three days a week. Another story to share - a spa in Ontario lost some business due to employee benefit cutbacks that no longer covered massage therapy. The good news is new clients started coming in and paying for their own massages because they wanted to feel less stressed and couldn’t afford a vacation south. So they stayed home and treated themselves to their local spa.
In intense times like these we need to recognize how to help nurture ourselves and move forward to positive results. Spas are a great answer! Our cover features one of the most romantic destinations in Canada, Le Château Montebello, the largest log structure hotel with an incredible spa – it is a great escape this spring.
As well we have our pages full of additional spas to help you rekindle, and escape to as well as recipes, health and wellness. We have added a business component for spas across Canada and now provide information on great products. For our readers looking to take wellness courses or change careers, you can now find schools and courses.
This is our opportunity here at Spa Life Magazine to let people across our country know about the great spas we have in Canada; from local day spas to destination overnight spas to medical spas. I invite you to see our new commercial at: www.spalifemagazine.com and click onto the link.
See you next issue,
Mary

Luxury—the New Necessity!
This past spring I invited my cousin Sharon to join me on spring break in Florida. It was the first time we had spent time together in years. We spent a week of talking, laughing and solving life’s problems, and yes we even spa-ed together! Ladies spa-ing together is like a World Summit meeting, you can read about it this issue.
Spas have replaced the shopping sprees friends use to do 20 years ago – now it is the Spa- spree. Even men are seeing spas as an opportunity to de-stress. Spas now offer man-cations—guys getting together at a spa! Whether they are on a golf vacation or business meeting, it doesn’t matter any more—spas are OK to go to, no matter who or what you are!
Unfortunately we see it as luxury but I think it is a necessity. I now have made a commitment to myself to de-stress more often and I have a standing appointment at my massage therapist every two weeks. My luxury is being good to myself and to start looking after me.
You’ll love our cover story. The Chrysalis Inn and Spa offers wonderful pampering and caters to those looking for a luxurious escape. It makes a perfect girlfriends’ getaway or a romantic couples’ destination.
I hope that your next luxury is about you and committing to a better self. Whether you choose a hands-on-therapy, a medical treatment or a trip to a hot springs, de-stressing and investing in your health is a luxury you shouldn’t put off any longer—enjoy!

Roman thermae
Bathing has played an important role in the life of the ancient
The structure of thermae
Public bathing was practiced by the both, the rich and the poor. The difference is that the patricians, the reach citizens were accompanied by one or more slaves serving them during the bathing in thermae. They were also bringing their own bathing implements: brushes, oils for massage, dish for scooping water and the strigil (a small, curved, metal tool use to scrap dirt and sweat from the body).
The building structure of thermae was very complex, but it had three “principal” rooms: caldarium, tepidarium and frigidarium. Sometimes they have also had laconicum – a hot, dry area for inducing sweating.
The bathing process in therame
The bathing process often begun with some workout in the palestra where different sports and activities took place, in order to stimulate the circulation and keep the body in a good condition. Afterwards, the bathers were passing the three rooms of different purposes. Firstly, they would go to tepidarium – normally the largest room in thermae, decorated with the most precious mosaics and marbles. This was the place where the bathers firstly assembled and spent an hour or more, relaxing and being “oiled” (mostly using the olive oil). The following step was caldarium, very hot and steamy room, heated by the under floor heating system, with the bath of hot water (swimming pool). Very often, the laconicum was an integral part of the caldarium, where bather would stay for a short time and prepare its body for the massage. Afterwards, the vigorous massage was the next, followed by removing off the dead skin with the earlier mentioned strigil. The final phase of the bathing process was frigidarium where bathers would plunge into the large pool of cold water, refreshing themselves and withdrawing themselves to the one of the relaxing areas, library or assembly room to continue with the socializing and intellectual discussions.

Temazcalli – “Mexican vapor-bath”
In
Healing sauna
Temazcalli differs from the other sweat lodges in its purpose. It did not have the ceremonial meaning; neither was it used for the cleansing, relaxation and general well-being. Its main purpose was healing. It was a kind of therapeutic lodge where medical practices took place and sick persons were cured. According to the ancient beliefs, when a person entered Temazcalli, it returned once again to its mother’s uterus, presided by the goddess of both, gods and humans who cured a person of all its physical and spiritual illnesses. The uniqueness of this sweat lodge that distinguishes it from the others is in a different heating process. Here, person in charge of the bath could adjust the temperature and the humidity to meet the particular needs of a person which is treated, and vapor was made of herbal teas adjusted to the “patient”.
In the last ten years a new interest in these ancient sweat baths appeared and now more of them are constructed everywhere throughout the country. Thus you can still today visit temazcallis in central

HISTORY OF THE SAUNA AND OTHER SWEAT LODGES
Sauna has existed for thousands of years, in numerous different forms, all over the world. The first notions about the sweat baths similar to saunas date back even from the Stone Age, some 6000 years ago. Furthermore, there are some beliefs that saunas existed in a year 6000 BC. In fact, there are some written records found, dating back from that period, where Herodotus described “how some tribes rolled hot stones into small tents, where they went to sweat”. Regardless of the accuracy of the time data, we can still say that our ancestors revealed the pleasure of sauna ages ago.
For the Finns it is likely to believe that they have sauna already for two thousand years in spite of existing evidences dating back just about the half of this time. Still, the Finnish sauna was not the only sweat “house”, but the sweat baths in various forms infiltrated in the cultures throughout the world.

The appearance of sweat-bathing…
The sauna is a form of sweat bath with a long tradition, but it is hard to define the first sauna. Already the nomad people, when they were wandering around the territory which later became Finland, had made heated holes in the ground, covered with a canvas or animal skin. These sweat-bathing places we can consider as primitive forms of saunas. But the sauna is not the only sweat bath in the world. There are many other types of 'bathing houses' among the cultures, as the Roman thermae, the Turkish baths (Hammam), the Native Americans' sweat lodge, the Japanese bath furo or Russian banja. But for the Finns we can say that sauna is still a way of life to them, and we can freely say that they are the ones who spread the sauna culture around the world.
