Maximum Weight Limit – The New and Improved BMI?

scale

By now, most people are familiar with the BMI (Body Mass Index)—a tool that can tell you whether you are underweight, healthy, or overweight based on a mathematical calculation using your height and weight. (Don’t know your BMI? Try this calculator.)

Now George Fernandez, a professor of applied statistics and director of the Center for Research Design and Analysis at the University of Nevada, Reno, says he’s come up with a simpler way to calculate your healthy weight level. He’s calling it the Maximum Weight Limit.

Here’s his explanation: “For men and women, there is a baseline height and weight. For men, the baseline is 5-feet, 9-inches tall and a Maximum Weight Limit of 175 pounds, meaning that a 5-foot, 9-inch tall man should weigh no more than 175 pounds. For women, the baseline is 5-feet tall and a Maximum Weight Limit of 125 pounds …”

For men: Take 175 lbs and add or subtract 5 lbs  for every inch that you’re under or over 5′9″. That will give you your Maximum Weight Limit.

For women: Take 125 lbs and add or subtract 4.5 lbs for every inch that you’re under or over 5 feet. Then you’ll have your MWL.

For example, a 5′9″ woman (me) wouldn’t want to weigh more than 165.5 lbs.

Phew! That’s enough math for me for one day. Try calculating your MWL. Do you think it’s better/easier than the BMI?

Perhaps looking beyond your weight with a body assessment is the real way to improve your overall health.

Gross National Happiness in Bhutan

bhutan2

Imagine a country that measures its success not on how much profit the stock market makes or the amount of goods sold and purchased, but rather on the overall happiness of its people. An impossible dream, you think?

Nope, not if you live in the Buddhist country of Bhutan. Their King made Gross National Happiness an official goal of the government, as noted in one of his 2007 speeches: “…we must always remember that as our country, in these changing times finds immense new challenges and opportunities, whatever work we do, whatever goals we have—and no matter how these may change in this changing world – ultimately without peace, security, and happiness we have nothing. That is the essence of the philosophy of Gross National Happiness…”

Wow. I was reminded of Bhutan’s Gross National Happiness policy today by way of a bumper sticker. It was one of those times when being in that exact place at that exact time made my day. It was a wonderful reminder that despite the daily news, really good things are happening in this world  and that anything’s possible.

This got me inspired to start thinking about my own happiness quotient—and making one of my mantras: Don’t worry—be happy!

Special Delivery – Spud! Grocery Service

SPUD_delivery-teamI always thought online grocery shopping was a bit ridiculous. How busy do you have to be not to have time to go to the store? Now I am that busy and so I am thrilled to have discovered Spud! a new type of online grocery service.

Specializing in organic, natural, and local products, Spud! has everything I’d ever want to go to the store for and more—from bulk spices to grass-fed beef to natural bathroom cleaner—and they deliver it to my door every Friday, without fail.

The great thing is that I don’t need to be there to let them in and guess what? All that convenience actually costs less (far less) than what I had been paying at the grocery store around the corner from my house.

Spud! has also calculated that, because it buys from local producers, has a warehouse instead of a store, and delivers to multiple people per route, it saves hundreds of tonnes of CO2 every year. The service is currently available in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Portland in the U.S., as well as Mainland British Columbia, Greater Victoria, Vancouver Island, and Calgary in Canada, and Spud! plans to continue to add new delivery areas over the next two years.

Happy Spring!

It is no secret I love to see the snow go as that means longer days and more sunshine. I dread winter mainly for the lack of sun and dark mornings. I always hang a new wreath on my door that is bright and colourful.

That has also been my approach to this recession we are experiencing bright and sunny!

On a recent television appearance on Canada AM, I was interviewed by Beverly Thomson about how spas are doing in this economy. I have received emails and letters about spas closing, some expanding with new locations; about corporate business down, but other spas flourishing because people recognize that they have to look after themselves in these times. So it is really varied across the country. What is most important is that we each look after ourselves in the best way possible.

We have had good news about new spas opening and there are some great deals to be had in spas offering treatments in their less busy times such as Monday – Wednesday. I’d rather see great deals than close the spa for three days a week. Another story to share - a spa in Ontario lost some business due to employee benefit cutbacks that no longer covered massage therapy. The good news is new clients started coming in and paying for their own massages because they wanted to feel less stressed and couldn’t afford a vacation south. So they stayed home and treated themselves to their local spa.

In intense times like these we need to recognize how to help nurture ourselves and move forward to positive results. Spas are a great answer! Our cover features one of the most romantic destinations in Canada, Le Château Montebello, the largest log structure hotel with an incredible spa – it is a great escape this spring.

As well we have our pages full of additional spas to help you rekindle, and escape to as well as recipes, health and wellness. We have added a business component for spas across Canada and now provide information on great products. For our readers looking to take wellness courses or change careers, you can now find schools and courses.

This is our opportunity here at Spa Life Magazine to let people across our country know about the great spas we have in Canada; from local day spas to destination overnight spas to medical spas. I invite you to see our new commercial at: www.spalifemagazine.com and click onto the link.

See you next issue,

Mary

Shea it Best

We all know that hydration is crucial and that drinking plenty of water optimizes the functions of the body. What some people forget is that the body needs not only to be hydrated from the inside but also from the outside. With the summer sun sapping moisture from your clients' skin, 'tis the perfect season to introduce ultra-moisturizing shea butter treatments into your spa.
