The idea for the world competition in sauna bathing was born among a group of men who enjoyed an extremely hot sauna, and held unofficial competitions in public sauna in Heinola swimming hall. In a year 1999, a first Sauna Bathing World Championship was organized, at the same place, but this time as an official world competition!

Every sauna lover can join the competition and get into the hottest arena of the world - a sauna. Temperature is 110˚C, and in every 30 seconds, a half a liter of water will be thrown on the stove. Just the toughest will persist and get the title of the winner, but all the participants will enjoy in being a part of the hottest event of the year.

In the first year, there were no international competitors in the finals. Nevertheless, it didn't take many years to have many international participants at the Championship, who were serious rivals to the Finns in the finals! Sauna World Championship has also gained a significant status among international media. In a year 2008, a title of the champion in the men's series went to Bjarne Hermansson from Finland, while Women's Championship went to Leila Kulin, also from Finland.
